Dance as Self-Denial

Rarely have I been so convicted in dance class. In the brief theology lesson before class, my teacher explained dance as “contemplation of one’s partner in the spirit of the music.” As soon as he said it, something in me tensed. That’s not how I follow either my dance partners or my Savior; I’m much too self-focused.

It’s true that dance is a wonderful gift of self-expression. God created us in His image, each with unique gifts, personalities, bodies, and spirits, and He is glorified when we express that. It pleases Him when we are at peace with who He made us to be, just as it pleased Him to make us so. I believe He rejoices when we enjoy and express that back to Him as well as share it with others, inviting them into the freedom and fullness of all who God created them to be.
